Reporting cattle movements is moving into a new digital era

Track. Trace. Inform.

The Livestock Information Service (LIS) is specifically designed to improve the performance and sustainability of the livestock industry by transforming the quality of livestock movement data throughout the supply chain.

England’s updated LIS technology, with the ability to trace multiple species through one system, aims to roll out the enhanced service to cattle keepers end of 2025. Existing livestock traceability systems will remain in place until the new services across England and the devolved administrations are fully operational. As part of this move, the Standard Interface Specification (SIS) will also be decommissioned at the same time.

Key features of the new cattle service:

  • Ability to report cattle movements with ease from a mobile, tablet or desktop.
  • Option to amend animal details (subject to rules), record lost, stolen and found animals, and record an imported live animal and an exported live animal.
  • Safe and secure records you can check and update with ease
  • Faster more accurate online movement data to support better disease control.
  • Have an increased view of animals on your holding from 6 months to 18 months.

The data from the new cattle traceability service will provide government and industry with the information they need to respond effectively to animal diseases. In addition to statutory traceability, a core objective is to improve operational efficiency, increase levels of insight and facilitate further development, research and innovation within the livestock sector.
